Daniel Pailthorpe spent 10 years as principal flute with the English National Opera and is now co-principal in the BBC Symphony Orchestra. We are delighted to have Daniel with us to share his wealth of experience in solo, ensemble and orchestral playing. The day will end with a short recital by Daniel.

Review from Pan December 04 edition "It was a thrilling day for south-west flute choir Flute Cocktail on 2 May, when they were joined by other flautists from the Devon and Cornwall area for an exciting workshop at Sterts Arts Centre. The day was organised by Flute Cocktail's director Michael Wood, and was well supported by group members and other flautists. The event was led by Daniel Pailthorpe, co-principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, who gave expert advice in group rehearsals, masterclasses and individual lessons. The masterclasses covered a range of abilities and styles, and Daniel was able to entice excellent playing from all three volunteers, while also suggesting improvements. We all learned a great deal from the classes and are grateful to Daniel, not only for his lessons throughout the day, but also for his glittering performance in the afternoon recital, which included a rendition of Doppler's Andante and Rondo for two flutes,which he played with Michael Wood. The day began with a warm up session, tuning our bodies with Dalcroze rhythmical exercises. Following this, the whole group took part in a haunting and evocative run through of the Dvorzak Cello Concerto adapted for solo alto flute - the afternoon ended with a throng of flautists playing the same piece in the final recital. At lunchtime, there was an opportunity to browse through an extensive selection of sheet music and examine instruments and accessories on display from Just Flutes of Croyden, who supported the day, along with Jessica Rance woodwind instrument repairs of Lifton, Devon. We were privileged to have Roberta Gillette, from Powell Flutes in the USA, give a talk on flute manufacture, along with a demonstration of some of the instruments in her display. Flute Cocktail will certainly be planning more playing days in the future and, in the meantime, will continue to enjoy working and rehearsing together in Tavistock, Devon." review by Jackie Waddle
